๐ง When 59% of your workforce says the job is making them sick, it's a management crisis.
Monster's 2026 State of Workplace Mental Health Report landed this week with uncomfortable numbers: 59% of workers say their job harms their mental health monthly, nearly half report burnout daily or weekly, and 7 in 10 feel pressure to appear "okay" at work. The top culprits are increased workload, poor management, and elusive work-life balance - are all squarely in leadership's control.

๐ข Using RTO to signal control while deploying AI is, according to Cisco's CPO, "a trust-destroying sequence."
This week, PNC Bank went full-time in-office, and Fidelity announced over 21,000 employees will be back five days a week from September. Cisco CPO Kelly Jones offered a different playbook: AI and return-to-office are "two sides of the same cultural challenge," and organizations treating them as separate conversations are making a costly mistake. Her take - use AI to absorb transactional work so in-person time becomes genuinely purposeful, rather than mandating presence for its own sake.

Reuters reported Wednesday that LinkedIn is planning to lay off roughly 5% of its workforce, the latest in a string of tech sector cuts where AI is reshaping headcounts even when companies won't say so directly. LinkedIn is profitable and growing, which makes the cuts feel more strategic than crisis-driven.

๐ค Colorado just passed a bill making it illegal to set wages using AI that feeds on employee surveillance data.
Colorado's Senate passed HB26-1210 with a 19-15 vote, targeting what lawmakers call "surveillance pricing" - the use of AI and algorithmic models to gather personal data and set differentiated wages or prices based on it. In practice, employers in Colorado would be barred from using surveillance data to determine what to offer a job candidate. As AI creeps further into compensation decisions, this is the kind of legislation HR leaders everywhere should watch closely.

๐ Nearly half of US businesses say the Iran war has already hurt them, and hiring plans are the first thing getting cut.
A National Association for Business Economics survey found 48% of business leaders say the Iran war has harmed their operations, with 44% reporting higher input costs and 24% already downgrading investment and hiring plans. For HR leaders in industries with direct energy or supply chain exposure, this is the macro context that will define headcount conversations for the rest of the year, and it's worth getting ahead of with finance partners now.
