Canva's latest report on the power of employee recognition

Imagine Anna, a dedicated member of the team. She consistently brings fresh ideas to meetings, helps her colleagues, and always delivers quality work. But lately, she’s been feeling a little disconnected. Despite her contributions, she rarely hears a simple "thank you" or any acknowledgment of her efforts.

When employees like Anna don’t feel appreciated, their engagement and motivation can start to slip.

So, a new report on employee recognition just dropped, courtesy of Canva, as part of their “Love Your Work” campaign—and you know we had to dive in and see what’s trending. 🫣

The survey, conducted in August 2024, included 1,500 business professionals from the U.S. and Australia who spend more than 75% of their day on a computer or tablet. The insights reveal just how powerful a culture of appreciation can be.

Let’s break down the key findings:

1. 81% of appreciated employees love their job and workplace 🎉🏢

▶️ The survey found that 81% of employees who feel appreciated say they genuinely love their job, compared to just 33% of those who don’t feel appreciated.

▶️ On top of that, 91% of appreciated employees love their workplace, while only 18% of those who feel ignored say the same.

The difference is huge—recognition can result in a workplace people actually enjoy being a part of. Think about it: whenever you felt like your hard work was noticed, didn’t it make everything better? A little acknowledgment can make all the difference in keeping employees engaged and excited about their work. 😉

2. We know this, but let’s re-iterate: recognition fuels motivation, confidence, and productivity 🚀

Numbers don’t lie, and yet not a lot of companies are prioritizing recognition as much as they should. Why is that? 🤔

3. Frequency and personalization matter 📅✨

The survey shows that

▶️ 71% of highly satisfied employees are recognized at least a few times a month,

▶️  while 50% of neutral or dissatisfied employees receive recognition once a month or less,

▶️  and 27% are never recognized.

This shows a pretty obvious correlation between recognition and employee engagement—frequent appreciation is crucial for building an engaged workforce.

Not only does it matter how often employees are recognized, but also what they are recognized for.

▶️ Fewer than 48% of employees feel their unique qualities are recognized, with the number dropping to 40% for fully remote employees.

For example, tools like EngageWith help make recognition more meaningful by prompting you to add a personalized message that highlights specific achievements or qualities. Instead of a generic "Good job," you can celebrate a promotion or unique contribution with a thoughtful note. Plus, you can even use AI to enhance your message, making it even more impactful and tailored.

4. Different Generations, Different Needs: Why Feeling Heard Matters 👥

Alright, if the data so far isn’t convincing enough, let’s look at what Gen Z is saying!

▶️ 3 in 4 employees (75%) wish they received more appreciation, with Gen Z leading the way at 83%

▶️ Interestingly, Gen Z also reports the highest satisfaction with the recognition they do receive (77%), suggesting that when they are recognized, it resonates well with them.

▶️ The survey reveals that 59% of employees believe being listened to positively impacts their sense of appreciation.

Gen Z’s feedback is clear: they want more recognition, but when they do receive it, they’re satisfied. This tells us that getting it right is more important than doing it often without thought. For Gen Z, the quality of recognition matters just as much as the frequency.
